BNZ inaugurates a 36 MW photovoltaic solar plant in Moratalla (Murcia)
Moratalla, February 20th 2025.- BNZ, an independent power producer (IPP) specializing in the development, construction, and operation of photovoltaic solar projects, has officially launched operations at a new solar plant in Moratalla, Murcia. Named after the city itself, the plant has a total capacity of up to 36 MW.
The clean energy generated by this facility is expected to prevent the emission of 19,000 tons of CO2 equivalent annually—comparable to approximately 6,780 round-trip flights between Murcia and Miami.
The start of operations at the Moratalla plant marks BNZ’s fifth solar plant in Spain, following the successful launch of facilities in Mérida (Extremadura) and Cádiz (Andalusia). This milestone reinforces the company’s broader objective of deploying an aggregated renewable energy portfolio exceeding 1.7 GW across Europe.
During the construction phase, BNZ collaborated with 81 Spanish companies, 15 of which are based in the province. This partnership significantly contributed to job creation in the region, impacting not only the construction sector but also other industries, reflecting BNZ’s commitment to fostering local economic growth in Murcia throughout the project’s execution.
Luis Selva, General Manager of BNZ, stated: “The launch of operations at the Moratalla plant is another step in our strategy to strengthen our presence in Spain and Europe. We are deeply committed to decarbonization, and Murcia exemplifies a region striving to lead the renewable energy sector.”
Social and sustainable initiatives: BNZ’s positive impact in the region
As part of its commitment to generating value in local communities, BNZ has funded a pioneering educational project aimed at raising awareness among 750 Moratalla students about the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In collaboration with five primary schools—Germán Teruel, Jesucristo Aparecido, Colegio Rural Agrupado del Sabinar, La Tercia-Benízar, and Calar de la Santa—BNZ has helped identify existing projects aligned with specific SDGs while also incorporating new sustainability objectives into their curricula. This initiative has introduced key topics such as sustainability, equality, and safety into classrooms.
The program is part of the mODStegg project, which integrates gamified activities throughout the academic year to highlight the importance of achieving all 17 SDGs and the broader Agenda 2030. BNZ emphasizes the significance of participating in such initiatives to promote environmentally responsible education and sustainable development.
