MEET THE TEAM – IRENE ALONSO

  1. What is your role in BNZ?

At BNZ, I am responsible for optimising all our revenue streams. My role is to ensure that the company maximises revenue through a combination of market strategy, operational optimisation and effective contract and relationship management.

  1. How long have you been working in the renewable energy sector?

I’ve been in the renewable energy sector for over 18 years. This extensive experience has given me a clear view of how the industry has evolved and insights into potential future changes.

  1. How do you think the sector has changed in these years?

The renewable energy sector has undergone remarkable transformations. Technological advancements have significantly lowered the cost of solar photovoltaic systems, making them more accessible and efficient. There has also been a notable shift in public and governmental support towards sustainable energy, resulting in more favorable policies and increased investment in the sector. This evolution has transformed renewable energy from a niche interest to a mainstream, essential component of global energy strategies. These changes reflect a growing recognition of the importance of sustainable energy in addressing climate change and achieving energy independence.

  1. What are the main challenges for the sector in the coming years?

In the short term, the main challenges include integrating renewable energy sources into existing power grids, ensuring the reliability and efficiency of energy storage solutions, and navigating regulatory frameworks that can vary significantly across different regions. Overcoming these challenges will be crucial for the sector’s continued growth and success.

  1. And in the long term?

Long-term challenges involve continuing to drive down costs, improving energy storage technologies, and expanding grid infrastructure to support a higher penetration of renewable energy. Additionally, fostering global cooperation to address climate change and promoting sustainable practices worldwide remain critical. The decarbonization of the transport sector and the development of new renewable technologies are also key areas of focus.

  1. What does BNZ have that its competitors don’t?

BNZ differentiates itself through a strong commitment to environmental and social sustainability. We not only focus on producing 100% renewable energy but also ensure our projects benefit the local communities where they are installed. Our approach includes creating jobs, supporting local economies, and implementing environmentally friendly practices that go beyond mere compliance. This dedication to collective well-being and environmental stewardship sets us apart.

  1. How do you see BNZ in 5 years?

In five years, I see BNZ as one of the leading renewable energy developers in Southern Europe. We aim to significantly increase our renewable energy capacity and continue to lead in sustainability initiatives, making a substantial impact on reducing carbon emissions and fostering sustainable communities in Portugal, Italy, and Spain. Our goal is to be a benchmark of excellence in the industry.

  1. Which countries are making greater efforts for photovoltaic energy?

Southern European countries like Spain, Italy and Portugal are at the forefront of efforts to expand photovoltaic energy. These nations have implemented progressive policies, invested in renewable energy infrastructure, and set ambitious targets to increase the share of solar energy in their energy mix.

  1. What would you ask public administrations to promote this type of clean energy?

I would ask public administrations to provide consistent and long-term policy support, such as tax incentives and subsidies for renewable energy projects. Simplifying regulatory processes, investing in grid infrastructure, and promoting public-private partnerships are also essential to accelerate the transition to clean energy. Clear and stable regulatory frameworks are crucial to attract new investments in renewables.

  1. And the citizens?

I encourage citizens to support clean energy by adopting renewable energy solutions at home, advocating for green policies, and staying informed about environmental issues. Small actions, like using energy-efficient appliances and reducing waste, can collectively make a significant impact. Embracing the benefits that renewables generate in the environment as part of the energy transition is essential.

  1. What do you do in your day to day to reduce your carbon footprint?

In my daily life, I reduce my carbon footprint by using public transportation, minimizing waste, recycling, and choosing sustainable products. At home, I regulate the heating system to make it as efficient as possible and avoid consumerism by buying only what is necessary. I also support local, environmentally conscious businesses and make it a point to stay educated about environmental issues, actively participating in initiatives that promote sustainability and reduce carbon emissions.
